“MENDELSSOHN MANIA”

Great Piano Trios by both Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn

July 18-20, 2025

We hope you can join us for another very exciting concert featuring two amazing Piano Trios composed by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn within a few years of each other.  Felix Mendelssohn’s two great Piano Trios are a regular part of the current repertoire though they were not often played in the early 20th century as the Nazis rose to power and ultimately banned his works because of his Jewish birth.  Fanny’s Piano Trio and many of her 400 other compositions were largely forgotten and neglected because of her gender despite the tremendous power of her music.  As she once wrote:  “If nobody ever offers an opinion or takes the slightest interest in one’s production, one loses not only all pleasure in them, but all power of judging their value.  It must be a sign of talent that I do not give up, though I can get nobody to take an interest in my efforts.”   We will perform these two powerful Trios, both in D Minor, on the same program to showcase this incredibly creative family and also comment on the anti-semitism and misogyny that are a part of the Mendelssohn legacy.  Andrea Picard-Boecker on violin and Alicia Ward on cello will join me on this concert. They are both fabulous musicians.  You will not want to miss it.

Here is a clip from the 2nd mvt of Fanny’s Piano Trio:

Court Street Arts, Haverhill, NH
75 Court Street P.O. Box 125 Haverhill, NH 03765

We are thrilled to return to this wonderful restored performance venue in the quaint village of Haverhill, NH, where we have not performed since before Covid.  Court Street Arts has done a tremendous job filling this beautiful building with art and music for over 20 years.  Alumni Hall originally served as the Grafton County Courthouse in the 19th c. and later served as the auditorium and gymnasium for the Haverhill Academy. After the closing of the Academy, Alumni Hall remained empty until members of the Haverhill community came together to preserve and revitalize the building. In May of 2005, Alumni Hall underwent another transformation, this time as a cultural center where art, culture and community come together. It is dedicated to fostering and making accessible the fine and performing arts. Programs in the visual arts, music, dance, and theater that feature both regional and nationally- recognized artists are held year-round.   Tickets for this show are $20 and children 18 and under are always free.  For more info and to purchase tickets, please visit:  https://courtstreetarts.org/events/
